Notepad: Quick Notes with Auto-Save in Your Browser

3 min read By OhMyApps

Sometimes you just need a place to jot something down quickly — a thought, a snippet of text, a phone number, a quick draft. Our free browser Notepad auto-saves everything you type to localStorage, so your notes are still there when you come back. No account, no sign-up, fully private.

How to Use the Notepad

  1. Start typing: Click the text area and begin writing. That’s it
  2. Auto-save: Your notes are saved automatically after you stop typing for half a second
  3. Character and word count: See live counts above the text area as you type
  4. Download: Click “Download .txt” to save your notes as a plain text file
  5. Clear: Click Clear to erase all notes (with a confirmation prompt to prevent accidents)

Features

  • Auto-save to localStorage: Notes persist across browser sessions without any manual save action
  • Debounced saving: The tool waits 500ms after you stop typing before saving, keeping performance smooth
  • Character count: Live character count updates as you type
  • Word count: Live word count based on whitespace splitting
  • Download as .txt: Export your notes as a plain text file with one click
  • Clear with confirmation: The Clear button asks for confirmation before erasing everything
  • Save indicator: A brief “Saved” message with timestamp appears after each save

Common Use Cases

  • Quick notes: Jot down a thought, URL, or piece of information without opening a full app
  • Clipboard staging: Paste text here temporarily while working between applications
  • Draft writing: Start a rough draft that persists until you’re ready to move it elsewhere
  • Meeting notes: Take quick notes during a call or meeting
  • Code snippets: Store a snippet you want to reference later
  • Shopping lists: Quick list that you can access from the same browser

Tips

  • Notes are stored in your browser’s localStorage, which means they’re tied to this specific browser on this device
  • If you use private/incognito browsing, notes will be lost when you close the window
  • There’s no practical character limit beyond your browser’s localStorage quota (typically 5-10 MB)
  • Use the Download button before clearing if you want to keep a backup
  • The notepad is a simple text area — no rich formatting, which keeps things fast and distraction-free

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my notes private? Yes. Everything is stored locally in your browser. No data is sent to any server.

Will my notes survive a browser update? Generally yes. localStorage persists across browser updates. Clearing browser data or cookies may remove it.

Can I access my notes on another device? No. Notes are stored in this browser’s localStorage. Use the Download button to transfer text between devices.

Is there a size limit? localStorage typically allows 5-10 MB per origin, which is enough for hundreds of thousands of words.
